towering above Camps Bay.
The interiors are very nicely styled with dark wood floors throughout; a modern

About Hermanus:
Hermanus
is a sleepy coastal town built along the shores of Walker Bay near the Southern
most tip of Africa. Nestled between the mountain and sea and featuring fynbos
covered hiking trails, a number of beaches, two lagoons and a meandering wine
valley it is one of the most sought after holiday destinations in South Africa
for both eco-tourists and nature lovers.
Hermanus boasts the best land based whale watching in
the world with peak viewing times between August and December. The most
frequently seen whale in this area is the Southern Right Whale which has a
distinguishing v-shaped ‘blow’ and a number of callosities around its head. A
cliff path stretching from one side of the town to the other hugs the coastline
for about 12 km and gives whale watchers unlimited opportunities to study and
get within 20 m of these gentle giants. Telescopes situated alongside the Old
Harbour Museum make it possible to survey the entire Walker Bay and the whales
and dolphins at close range.
Hermanus
also offers some of the best shark cage diving opportunities.
With activities such as sea kayaking, abseiling, lagoon canoeing, sand
boarding, paragliding, horse riding, scuba diving and sailing, visitors are
never short of things to do and see. For the curious traveller, the surrounding towns - Hangklip, Kleinmond, Caledon,
Gans Bay, Napier, Bredasdorp and the holiday resort of Arniston- are also worth
a visit and offer a variety of outdoor activities. From Hermanus it is also a
short trip to the southern most tip of Africa, L'Agulhas, officially the point
where the Atlantic and Indian Ocean meet.
Day 9
Drive yourself to Swellendam
Day 9 – 10
1 night at Jan Harmsgat Country House, Swellendam on a bed
and breakfast basis.

This guest house is on a working farm in a
scenic valley. The towns of Robertson, Montagu, and McGregor are within close proximity
and Cape Agulhas (the southern tip of Africa) is an easy hour’s drive away.
The guest
house accommodation (which is non smoking) is decorated in an understated and
traditional style in the farms original slave quarters, and consists of four
large en-suite rooms with an adjoining lounge. Two loft rooms and the guest
lounge have expansive mountain views. Guests can relax by the pool with a book
from the library or explore the farm and wine routes, as well as museums and
heritage sites in nearby Swellendam and surrounding areas.
Conveniently situated a leisurely half-hour's drive through
beautiful farm-lands, from Swellendam; Jan Harmsgat Guest Farm has seen a
renaissance that captures its rich past, in a way that fits in with the discerning traveller's
needs: Space, charm and an unsurpassed opportunity to indulge in an authentic
country ambience and history.
An optional extra is to book a 4-course dinner for R190
(excludes drinks). The food is excellent
and the wine selection is from the local area.
The local chefs have been trained by some of South Africa’s best and the
whole experience is extremely memorable and highly recommended.
A beautiful cottage on the extreme boundary of the farm;
about 4 minutes drive from the main house.
The cottage has two double rooms and shares a single bathroom. The cottage sits at the foot of the mountains
and all you have for company are the sheep! Separate kitchen available for
self-catering. Self service continental breakfast included at the cottage.
To escape to verdict: this is something totally unique and rather
special. Jan Harmsgat is also fair trade
registered and very involved in the local upliftment community projects. The guesthouse itself is furnished in
original Afrikaaner Antiques and the owners restored the buildings dating back
to the 1700’s. There is so much to do in
the area ranging from DeHoop Nature reserve to the wine area of Robertson and
Bonnievale.
