Day 2 – Day 4

3 nights at Legado Mitico, Buenos Aires on a bed and breakfast basis

Legado Mitico is one of the latest boutique hotels to emerge in Buenos Aires trendy Palermo district and offers many improvements on some of it’s older rivals. Situated on a quiet cobbled street a short walk from a selection of bars, restaurants and shops this is a stylish slick small hotel with some wonderful design touches.

The common areas include a leafy courtyard, lounge, library and roof terrace with Jacuzzi. All are perfect to relax with a glass of wine and a good book.

The bedrooms are spacious and modern with sleek lines and dark colours.

Legado Mitico is perfect for Palermo – cool, trendy and you won’t want to leave.

11 rooms themed on historic Argentine personalities from Che Guevara and Eva Peron to General Belgrano.

Suite Facilities:  Air conditioner, fan, TV, dvd, CD player, frigeobar, wi-fi, safe, hairdryer.

Shared Facilities: Lounge, library, roof terrace, Jacuzzi, internet.

Activities nearby: Restaurants, bars, boutique shopping, underground rail to rest of Buenos Aires sites.

To escape to verdict: As with other old Buenos Aires converted townhouses the Legado Mitico’s high ceilings and wooden floors accentuate noise a little – footsteps and doors closing but this is a quality hotel with class and style and is a great place to hang out in a great suburb.

What to see and do in Buenos Aires:

There is so much to encounter in one of the most vibrant and sassy cities in the world. Take a stroll down to Recoleta, the stylish and glitzy central suburb and watch spontaneous lunchtime tango dancers in the pretty public gardens, contemplate in the atmospheric Cemetery of the Recoleta where Eva Peron is buried and mourners still loyally pass by and lay their respects. Hang out in Plaza San Martin with views over to trendy Puerto Madero before heading over to gritty and characterful San Telmo lined with antique shops, the best coffee shops and the Sunday market is a MUST, closed to traffic and set up with local artists wares and street performers. Palermo is the ultra trendy leafy suburb with designer boutiques, art galleries and bars, the place to be seen in and hang out in street cafes to people watch. La Boca for the famous football club and home of Maradona. Buenos Aires NEVER disappoints.

Day 5 – Day 11

7 nights at Estancia Huechahue, Patagonia Lake District on a full board basis

Huechahue is just a wonderful place to experience true Estancia life. Warm hospitality, homely convivial atmosphere and, of course endless superb riding over the 15,000 acres of Patagonian Steppe, traversing mountains, exploring canyons and meandering through forests.

Jane Williams has been hosting guests at Huechahue since 1990 and has created a wonderful environment for riding enthusiasts of all abilities.

The riding is either based at the estancia or there are opportunities to take part in the cattle drives at the start or end of the season taking the cattle from Spring to Summer pasture and vice versa, long but rewarding days across the Patagonian steppe covered in dust and 9 hours in the saddle but thoroughly, thoroughly enjoyable and more so due to fellow riders and sense of camaraderie and wonderful, solid courteous sure footed horses and very comfortable western saddles with sheep skin covers!

Jane offers a number of trips depending on when you're travelling including pack trips, cross continental trips to Chile and estancia to estancia treks. All are combined with staying at the estancia for a couple of days before to get prepared and get used to horses and tack. If she hasn't a trek planned you ride around the estancia and surrounding area and are based at the estancia.

Accommodation is in three bungalows in the gardens with each having 3 twin/double en-suite rooms with a communal lounge in the centre with sofas, chairs and fireplace. The bungalows are homely and cosy and with fully working amenities, constant hot water for baths and showers, essential after hours in the saddle. Meals are taken in Jane's main house all together around a table, lots of fun with like minded riders, mainly Brits but and occasionally Americans and Canadians.

The area is remote, it's northern Patagonia. You can either fly from Buenos Aires to the airport called Chapelco for San Martin de Los Andes which is about half an hour away or to the Lake District gateway town of Bariloche where it's a beautiful 2-3 hour coach trip where you can get dropped off right outside the estancia gates! Barilcohe is quite a nice add on to do either before or after your stay.

The estancia is extensive with stunning riding country allowing for all paces, it's true Argentine riding but to a safe but not over cautious standard, English influence as Jane is a true Brit but riding is western. Jane has been receiving guests since 1990 and is very experienced. Riders are competent and Jane will assess and match you to a suitable steed.

Room Facilities:  Cosy and homely, en-suite bathrooms, some have own open fireplaces with a basket of logs.

Shared Facilities: Lounge in the bungalow with fireplace, lounge in the main house, dining room in the main house, gardens.

Activities nearby: 15,000 acre estancia, viewpoints, canyons, condors, Indian burial chambers, rivers, fishing, trekking, riding.

To escape to verdict: Tried and tested excellent formula of spectacular authentic Argentine riding combined with wonderful homely hospitality. An escape to favourite that constantly delivers.

Highlights of the Lake District

Huechahue is a wonderful place for groups of friends looking to spend their time engaged in activities. Plentiful riding, fishing, hiking and just chilling in a family homestead without the formalities of hotels and restaurants.  There’s plenty of nightlife if you do feel you’d like to let your hair down a bit after staying at the estancia, Bariloche (a 2 hour drive away) is the centre for outdoor activities and every pursuit can be arranged from riding, cycling, climbing, trekking, fishing, golf, paragliding and in Winter Bariloche is buzzing as one of the main ski centres of Argentina.

Day 12 – Day 13

1 night at the Hotel Moreno, Buenos Aires on a bed and breakfast basis

Located on a busy one way street a 10 minute strol  from the plaza in the heart of San Telmo with bustling bars, vintage clothing, art and antique shops.

The Moreno is a gritty art deco building where one would raise eyebrows at first entrance but then be re-assured by the friendly efficient concierge and reception on the first floor. The Moreno is dark with a flair for valour but it grows on you! Rooms are no nonsense, spacious and slick. The bathrooms work, excellent shower, water pressure and clean shiny lines coupled with wood and cow hind rugs.

But the best feature of the Moreno in our opinion is their spacious roof terrace with large lounging sofas and outside Jacuzzi. It’s a wonderful space to relax at night working out the constellations of the southern hemisphere with the sound of the city night time buzz as a backdrop.

39 rooms of various categories mainly based on floor space.

Suite Facilities:  Air conditioner, fan, TV, CD player, frigeobar, safe, hairdryer, wi-fi.

Shared Facilities: Terrace, gym, Jacuzzi, restaurant, bar, tango theatre.

Activities nearby: Restaurants, bars, vintage and antique shopping, street theatre.

To escape to verdict: The Moreno grows on you. One does wonder when first entering but after an evening on the terrace you won’t want to leave. Rooms are very spacious and slickly and stylishly furnished – professional.
